Mabel Garza wins the Congressional Art Contest AGAIN!
Falfurrias High School Senior, Mabel Garza won the 2016 Artistic Discovery Congressional Art Competition for the second time. The Congressional Art Show is a nationwide contest that is held each year with each Congressional District hosting a contest for student artists in their areas. Congressman Ruben Hinojosa hosted the 15th District Contest in Edinburg and held a reception April 22. During the reception, the winner, our own Mabel Garza was announced. Mabel won with an acrylic painting of her dog entitled “Broken Tail.” With the honor of this award, Mabel also was awarded a $4000 Scholarship to the Savannah Art Institute in Savannah Georgia along with a free trip for two, courtesy of Southwest Airlines to Washington DC, where her artwork will be displayed with the student winners from all over the United States at the national exhibition in the Cannon Tunnel of the US House of Representatives.
This is the second year in a row that Mabel has won this honor. Her watercolor painting, “Sweat” won the award last year and is presently still on exhibit in the Cannon Tunnel. It will be replaced with “Broken Tail” for this upcoming year. Mabel is the daughter of Maria Allen and Robert Garza and a senior at FHS. Mabel is enrolled in Art IV with Marla Burleson as her art teacher at Fal High.
